In February, I decided to go back to school and take a continuing education program — publishing, to be exact. Not surprisingly, it’s a very interesting field and I’ve had great, supportive instructors. But you wouldn’t be wrong in assuming there aren’t many jobs. The particular program I’m taking consists of six in class courses — an overview of trade and educational publishing, copy editing (I have NO words), visual skills (I now have basic Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign knowledge), production, and publicity. These are my last three weeks and I’m going to miss everyone I’ve met and connected with. But due to the intensity of this twelve week program, I’ve neglected my summer reading list.
However, I have a little more time now and I was able to watch The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. I know, I’m a little late to the game. I’m obsessed though. I finished watching the 100+ episodes in about a week. So I need to thank my classmates Sarah and Diane for this recommendation. If you’ve never heard of this web series, you can watch it on Youtube. It’s a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice if you hadn’t guessed that already. The story is centred on Lizzie Bennet, the middle child of three sisters, and is completing her masters degree in mass communications. She started a video diary or vlog about her and her sisters’ lives for her thesis project. I have to admit that I’m really excited for The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet to make its way to a bookstore near me.
Now I’m off to the Toronto Islands — too beautiful a day to remain indoors studying!
